“Wheel of Fortune” recently delivered another unforgettable moment, adding to the show’s long history of memorable events.
With longtime host Pat Sajak nearing his final episode, the May 23 episode started with a hilarious misstep. Contestant Tavaris took a wild guess during a “Phrase” puzzle, confidently saying, “Right in the butt!” His face quickly turned to an “oops” expression as the audience erupted in laughter and gasps.

One fellow contestant, clearly shocked, exclaimed, “What?!” Sajak, ever the professional, calmly responded, “No,” before turning to contestant Blake, who humorously remarked, “This is the best!” causing even more laughter.
Sajak, trying to keep the show on track amidst the hilarity, added, “Yeah, that’s, that’s it. I think,” as the laughter continued. Tavaris acknowledged his mistake, telling Blake, “Much better answer.”
As the game moved forward, Sajak introduced the contestants and joked with Tavaris, saying, “Well, Tavaris, you’ve already made an impression on us.” Tavaris, still sheepish, apologized to Sajak, saying, “I apologize, Pat. I was a little excited.” Sajak, showing his typical good humor, replied, “We’ll figure out a way to handle that tastefully. I have no idea what that’ll be, but…” The laughter continued.
Social media quickly lit up with reactions to the moment, with some calling it a “Wheel of Fortune clip you will be seeing many times throughout the rest of your life” and others labeling it “Wheel of Fortune Hall of Fame” worthy. One X (formerly Twitter) user shared, “I may be an 83-year-old man who watches Wheel of Fortune regularly, but moments like this are rare and make it all worth it.”
Another person declared it the “greatest moment in Wheel of Fortune history,” while someone else commented, “Wheel of Fortune is a lot spicier than I remember.” Even the official Merriam-Webster account joined the fun, tweeting, “Yes, we saw the Wheel of Fortune clip you can stop sending it to us.”
Pat Sajak, who has been hosting “Wheel of Fortune” since 1981, announced his retirement in June 2023, marking the end of an era. The 77-year-old Emmy winner stated, “Well, the time has come. I’ve decided that our 41st season, which begins in September, will be my last. It’s been a wonderful ride, and I’ll have more to say in the coming months. Many thanks to you all. (If nothing else, it’ll keep the clickbait sites busy!)”
Following Sajak’s announcement, it was revealed that Ryan Seacrest would take over as host, and Vanna White extended her contract to stay on the show. As Sajak’s departure nears, moments like these highlight the joy and spontaneity that have made “Wheel of Fortune” a beloved television staple for over four decades.
