The Civil Police is still investigating the case of Paulo Roberto Braga, a 68-year-old man who was taken to a bank in Bangu, Rio de Janeiro, already deceased. Erika de Souza Vieira Nunes, 42, was arrested while attempting to withdraw a loan in his name. Despite her efforts to get him to sign a document, Braga remained unconscious.

The incident occurred on Tuesday afternoon (16th). Video footage from the bank shows Braga sitting in a wheelchair, clearly unresponsive. Erika tried to guide his hand to sign a document, but he showed no reaction. She pleaded with him, saying, “Uncle Paulo, are you listening? You need to sign.” However, he remained unresponsive. In her statement to the police, the bank manager reported that she noticed Braga’s condition and asked Erika to sign on his behalf. She then called the Mobile Emergency Care Service (Samu) when she realized he was unresponsive. Samu confirmed Braga’s death around 3 pm.
The police investigation revealed that Braga died lying down, not sitting up as seen in the bank footage. Despite this, the autopsy report couldn’t determine whether he died before arriving at the bank or the scene. Erika remains in custody for attempted theft and desecration of a corpse.
What did Erika say to the police?
In her statement to the police, Erika claimed that Paulo Braga was her uncle and that she had been his caregiver. She stated that they had gone to the bank after his discharge from the hospital. Erika mentioned that Braga was alive and conscious when they left home but stopped responding inside the bank.
The defense argues that Braga died in the bank, contrary to the police findings. They claim that Erika’s innocence will be proven, citing her psychiatric issues as a contributing factor. The investigation continues to uncover more details surrounding this tragic incident.
